In recent years, LED light therapy has become one of the most sought-after aesthetic treatments in several indications, including acne, fine lines, and even specific skin conditions such as psoriasis.
What is LED Light Therapy?
Light-emitting diode therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses LED lights to penetrate the deeper layers of skin and improve overall skin health.
In Dermatology LED light therapy is commonly used in conjunction with other treatments including creams, ointments, and facials to boost overall efficacy.
Using various wavelengths that correspond to different visible colours, LED therapy can target each layer of skin, including the innermost layer of the skin, known as the hypodermis.
- Blue light – targets the epidermis (uppermost layer of skin)
- Yellow and Red light penetrates deeper into the dermis.
- Near-infrared light penetrates the hypodermis.
Now, each colour is designed to target specific conditions, but they can be used in conjunction to target several conditions at once.
- Red LED light therapy – is known to help reduce inflammation and stimulate the production of collagen within the skin.
- Blue LED light therapy helps to destroy acne-causing bacteria.
What are the benefits of LED light therapy?
Both non-invasive and highly effective, LED light therapy is suitable for all skin types and tones. As it doesn’t use UV light, it doesn’t cause any damage, or irritation to the skin, and can be used to target several skin concerns, including:
- Acne
- Skin rejuvenation, including reducing fine lines.
- Wound healing
- Psoriasis
How long does it take for LED light therapy to work?
To see significant benefits, you will typically require a series of in-office treatments usually spaced one week apart. After that, regular maintenance sessions may be recommended.
At Dr. Jinah Yoo Dermatology, we will invite you to a consultation ahead of treatment to assess your skin concerns, and overall skin health to ensure LED light therapy is right for you. We will then explain the process in detail to ensure you understand and know what results you can expect.
What happens During LED Light Treatment?
Before an in-office treatment, your skin will be thoroughly cleansed to remove all traces of makeup and grime from the skin. If recommended, your Dermatologist will then carry out your selected facial before beginning the LED light therapy.
You will then be provided with safety goggles to protect your eyes from the bright lights. The LED device is then placed above your skin for around 20 minutes. LED treatment takes around 20 minutes and is painless although you may experience warmth from the light.
