Changes to the Skin (Dermis layer)

Collagen is the main structural protein found in dermis (deeper layer of our skin) which keeps the skin firm and plump.

From the age of 23, the collagen production drops by 1% each year and leads to wrinkle formation, thinner skin and dull skin complexion with less collagen.

Elastin is another important protein found in dermis which helps your skin “bounce back” but this also thins with age and causes wrinkle formation.

Changes to Facial Fat

Another skin ageing features causing sagging skin is loss/movement of fat pads (groups of fat under the skin). Under our skin, we have small pockets of fat pads which creates volumes on the face such as cheeks. However, these fat pads become smaller or move down with ageing and causing sagging skin, such as deepening of smile line, jowl, eye bags and hollowing of the lateral cheeks.

Changes to Facial Bone

Facial bone also changes with ageing. Some parts of the facial bone can become smaller, removing structural support for the overlying tissue such as fat and skin, causing sagging of the skin. This change is often seen around the eyes and the chin.
