Common Types of Skin Lesions

A lesion is an area of skin that has an abnormal growth or appearance compared to the skin that surrounds it, often in the form of a bump or patch.

  • Warts – caused by a virus they often appear as lumps on the skin.
  • Sun Spots – flat marks that develop on the skin in different shades of brown, tan or black. They are an attempt by the skin to protect itself from further sun damage having been exposed to too much sun.
  • Moles – dark patches of skin that can be congenital, common, or atypical. Atypical moles need to be monitored closely as they can turn into skin cancer.
  • Skin Tags – growths on the skin that look similar to warts. They are harmless but can sometimes be irritating.

Methods

  • Laser Removal

Some pigmented lesions can be removed with laser treatment.

The laser uses light energy to break down the pigment within the mole.

Laser mole removal is a good option for removing a mole from the face as there is less risk of scarring.

However, if there is a personal or family history of skin cancer, this method is not advised.

  • Shave Removal

Skin lesions that protrude from the skin can be ‘shaved’ off after a numbing injection.

This is usually done using a blade and the wound base is burnt off with a hot diathermy to stop any bleeding vessels.

May be left with a pink mark on your skin where the mole was, but this should fade over time.

  • Excision Removal

Some deeper seated skin lesions may need to be cut away in an ellipse shape.

This procedure is performed under local anaesthetic and requires few stitch to close the wound.

A small linear scar will be left, which can fade over time or improved with laser subsequently.
